OAK GROVE

The homeowners of this ranch style home requested an updated clean and minimal look with more usable space, a variety of blooming plants throughout much of the year, and easier accessibility to the backyard hillside. Birch River Design updated the front entrance with stone columns and a small paver patio to greet visitors inside the new gate. A new paver pathway, porch steps, low maintenance plants and LED lighting were added to complete the front yard landscape.

The backyard’s existing retaining walls were mismatched and needed to be replaced. We designed new concrete retaining walls and three new stairways to access the hillside. A railroad tie path meanders through the oak trees and up to a higher path which leads around the perimeter of the hillside. The new paver patio was expanded slightly and LED lighting was added throughout (the clients later added additional solar path lights). Two turf areas were re-planted with new turf that requires less water. The plant palette primarily consists of a variety of low-water plants and California native plants underplanting the numerous existing oak trees.
